SEATTLE - The Washington State Patrol says a pedestrian who tried to cross Interstate 5 in Seattle early Saturday was hit by a car and caused a spectacular crash, and it's remarkable no one was killed.
Twenty-six-year-old Joel Martinez-Jose was driving a 1993 Honda Civic northbound when he tried unsuccessfully to swerve to avoid 39-year-old Thau Qual Le. The impact threw Le clear of the roadway, and the Civic wound up in the next lane over where it was almost completely demolished by a U.S. Postal Service semi truck.
Investigators say it's amazing that Martinez-Jose suffered only minor injuries. Le was taken to Harborview Medical Center in serious condition and is expected to survive.
The highway was closed for several hours.
