5 killed in 4 crashes on Oregon highways

SALEM, Ore. -- A 31-year-old Salem man died in a single car crash on Highway 22 west of the Santiam Junction on Saturday afternoon.

Investigators said a 2003 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling west on Highway 22 when it tried to pass a car in front of it. The Volkswagen lost control, slid off the road, hit a tree, and rolled several times as it continued to slide down the embankment.

The driver of the Jetta, 31-year-old Alesander Shumilov, of Salem, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The highway was wet at the time.
