The atomic-era architecture of Richland's Uptown Shopping Center underscores the community's history as a "company town" for the nuclear engineers -- and now cleanup crews -- working at the nearby Hanford site, a Department of Energy operated facility that once produced plutonium for nuclear weapons and is now the most contaminated site in North America.
