OLYMPIA, Wash. - Washington's Governor said privatizing the state's ferry system might be one way to save the state money. Governor Chris Gregoire announced she is exploring the idea as part of her plan to reform the state government.
"I've asked the experts to tell us the good, the bad and the ugly about what would happen if we did we did that," said Gregoire.
The Governor said she would not privatize the ferry system if it meant compromising safety or customer service. She also said she would not make a move that would make ferry service unaffordable for the general public.
With a projected $3 billion deficit for the 2011-2013 biennium, Gregoire announced plans for a new initiative to "transform Washington's budget process."
Gregoire wants every dollar spent by state government to be justified.
