A local power couple known for generous donations to Democratic candidates has reportedly given $5,000 to the gubernatorial campaign fund of Republican Attorney General Rob McKenna.

The Seattle Times reports Costco co-founder Jeff Brotman and his wife, philanthropist Susan Brotman had contributed more than $10,000 over the years to Gov. Chris Gregoire’s campaigns, but none to her Republican opponent Dino Rossi.

The Brotmans also hosted Pres. Obama for a $17,000 per person fundraiser at their Medina home in February.

Jeff Brotman would not comment on why they are donating to McKenna, but the Times reporter Jim Brunner speculates it’s because Brotman is a former president of the University of Washington Board of Regents. McKenna has campaigned for an increase to higher education funding.
