RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — With Democrat Mark Herring building a seemingly insurmountable lead in the recount for Virginia attorney general, his opponent, Republican Mark Obenshain, has scheduled a news conference.

The Obenshain campaign didn't state a reason for the Wednesday afternoon news conference. It wouldn't elaborate on a short advisory it sent to the media.

The news conference comes amid a recount in what had been the closest race in modern Virginia political history. Herring topped Obenshain by 165 votes out of 2.2 million cast Nov. 5. Obenshain than petitioned for a recount.

Based on Herring's numbers, the Democratic state senator from Loudoun County had widened his lead to 866 votes.

A three-judge recount court is deciding challenged ballots in Richmond. But they are short of what Obenshain would need to overtake Herring.
