SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Norma Torres has handily won a state Senate seat in a Southern California special election.

Figures on the secretary of state's website say the Democrat got 59.4 percent of the vote in Tuesday's election. Her Republican challenger, Ontario Mayor Paul Leon, got 40.6 percent.

Torres, who's currently a state Assemblywoman, won the vacant set for the 32nd Senate District, which includes portions of Los Angeles and San Bernardino counties.

Democratic voters outnumber registered Republicans there nearly 2-1.
