SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Democrat Ken Cooley has won a tight race to represent eastern Sacramento County in the state Assembly, bringing his party closer to the two-thirds majority it needs to raise taxes without Republican votes.

Cooley defeated Republican Peter Tateishi in the 8th Assembly District, according to an updated vote tally Friday.

The Rancho Cordova city councilman was elected with nearly 53 percent of the vote over Tateishi, formerly chief of staff for Republican Rep. Dan Lungren.

Democrats must win two more narrow contests to gain the 54 seats they need for a supermajority in the 80-member Assembly.

Sharon Quirk-Silva is leading in her bid to unseat Republican Assemblyman Chris Norby in Orange County's 65th Assembly District. Democrat Rudy Salas also has a narrow lead in the Central Valley's 32nd Assembly District.
