SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Opponents of Gov. Jerry Brown's November tax proposal are asking California television and radio stations to stop running ads they say make false claims.
Three TV ads that began airing this week for Proposition 30 say revenue from the temporary sales and income tax increases the governor seeks cannot be touched by Sacramento politicians. Yet that claim is at odds with an independent legislative analysis and Brown's previous statements.
In a letter sent Friday, the No on 30 campaign says stations should not be used "as a vehicle to mislead voters."
The budget signed by Brown earlier this year calls for $6 billion in cuts to K-12 schools and colleges if Proposition 30 fails, yet the additional tax revenue also would free up billions of dollars for general purposes.
