DEL MAR, Calif. (AP) — Mitt Romney says he was joking when he made a California dig while fundraising in the Golden State.

The Republican presidential candidate charged Saturday President Barack Obama is taking America on a "pathway to become like Europe," saying "Europe doesn't work there. It's never going to work here." He then added "It's even possible we could be on a pathway to become California — I don't want that either."

Romney spent Saturday focusing exclusively on courting donors in California.

At fundraising event at the Beverly Hilton Hotel that his campaign said raised $6 million, Romney criticized President Barack Obama for failing to "fix Washington."

Earlier, he told roughly 650 supporters gathered at a luxury hotel north of San Diego he's done raising money in the area.

In the face of criticism that he's too focused on raising campaign cash, Romney is about to launch what advisers call an "intense battleground state schedule."
