PORTLAND – Students at Jefferson High School planned a walkout Friday in support of the Portland Association of Teachers during ongoing contract talks with the school district.
The district sent a new contract offer to the union Wednesday and the ball is now in the teachers' court.
The Portland Student Union announced the walkout would take place at 12:15 p.m. Wilson High School also planned a smaller rally at 11:40 a.m.
Students said the events were leading up to a plan to pack the next Portland Public Schools board meeting on Jan. 13 at 5:30 p.m.
The teachers union and the district last got together during a marathon 20-hour session earlier this week.
Both sides agreed to meet later in the week and said significant progress was made. Some concensus was reached in workload and health insurance, but now the sticking point is salary.
The district is offering a 6 percent cost-of-living increase over the next six years, a one-time 1 percent increase for additional instructional days, and step increases for eligible teachers.
The teachers union has not yet commented on the offer.
