WEST LINN, Ore. -- Police have seen a spike in the number of vehicle break-ins in several West Linn neighborhoods, and have asked residents to remain vigilant.

Since April 1, there have been 42 separate reports of thefts and vehicle break-ins in the Willamette, Savannah Oaks and Parker Crest neighborhoods, according to officer Mike Francis of the West Linn Police Department.

The total loss has been estimated at $7,500. Police said in many cases the vehicle doors have been left unlocked, and in some case the thieves have entered through open garage doors.

"Our officers on nights have been working diligently in the neighborhoods locating unsecure premises and notifying home owners," Francis said. "Since April 1, 2013 they have located 110 open garage doors throughout the city and notified the homeowners."

Francis offered the following tips to help keep the crimes from occurring:

  • Do not leave valuables in your car.
  • Take a moment to ensure your car is locked and the alarm is set.
  • Before going to bed check to see that your garage door is closed.

And he asked that anyone noticing suspicious activity call 911 immediately.
