PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- Spc. Brandon Joseph Prescott, 24, of Bend, died Saturday with four others when an improvised explosive device struck their vehicle Saturday in the Maiwand district of Afghanistan's Kandahar province.
Prescott and the others were with the 1st Battalion, 36th Infantry, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division out of Fort Bliss Texas.
Prescott was born in West Covina, Calif., and enlisted on April 19, 2010 in Portland. He went through basic at Fort Benning, Ga., then assigned to the unit in Texas.
An Army spokesman said "shortly after arriving to Fort Bliss, he set himself apart from his peers in the platoon and was assigned as the Assistant Team Leader." He was deployed to Afghanistan on Dec. 12, 2012.
His awards include the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Army Commendation Medal with Valor, the Army Good Conduct Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Afghan Campaign Medal with a Campaign Star, the NATO Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge.
