EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — The mother of a 24-year-old man who died in the Cottage Grove jail last year is suing the city, its police department and several officers.
The lawsuit claims they're at fault for the death May 5 of Nathan Scott Cooper.
The Register Guard (http://bit.ly/12xwcP4) reports the lawsuit claims the plaintiffs showed deliberate indifference and committed civil rights violations. It seeks unspecified damages.
Cooper was sentenced April 26, 2012, on drug charges and booked into the jail.
Oregon State Police said Cooper was released the next day to receive medical treatment for drug withdrawal but failed to return and was re-arrested four days later.
An autopsy concluded he died of aspiration pneumonia, which can occur when food or fluids are breathed into the lungs.
