TUALATIN, Ore. -- A man was arrested for killing his 13-year-old Labrador retriever with a hatchet after a neighbor found the dog's body, police said.
Officers were called at 1 p.m. Thursday to the Rivercrest Meadows Apartments, at 11865 SW Tualatin Rd., on the report of a large dog found dead in in a dumpster, said Lt. Greg Pickering of the Tualatin Police Department.
Police and animal control officers used a microchip implanted under the dog's skin to find the owner, 43-year-old Leroy Jacob Moffitt. Moffitt "admitted to officers that he used a hatchet to kill the dog earlier in the day," Pickering said. The motive was not released.
Moffitt was booked into the Washington County Jail for aggravated animal abuse.
