PORTLAND – A man was arrested Thursday after he tried to steal a puppy from the Oregon Humane Society, police said.

On Monday, Jan. 14, humane society employees told police 36-year-old Brent Klausner tried to make off with a terrier-mix puppy named "Burkhead" he took from a cage. The employee said Klausner broke a lock, grabbed the puppy, and walked toward the counter with it under his coat, said Sgt. Pete Simpson with Portland police.

When the employee encountered Klausner, he gave up "Burkhead" and left the shelter.

Police spoke with Klausner a few blocks away but did not arrest him, Simpson said.

After consulting the District Attorney’s Office, police decided to arrest Klausner. He was taken into custody while at work in Aloha Thursday and charged with attempted theft and criminal mischief.
