SALEM, Ore. (AP) — Oregon Corrections Department officials say a 49-year-old inmate at a state prison in central Oregon has died unexpectedly in a hospital.
Agency spokeswoman Liz Craig said Wednesday that an Oregon State Police investigation determined the death of John Derrick Stafford was not related to a crime.
An inmate at the Deer Ridge Correctional Institution in Madras, Stafford was taken to an area hospital on Monday with unspecified medical issues and died Monday afternoon. No cause of death was released.
The spokeswoman says Stafford was serving time for a Marion County burglary conviction. He was scheduled for release in late 2015.
Deer Ridge is a minimum-custody facility that houses about 750 inmates who are within four years of release.
