THE DALLES, Ore. -- Police canceled an Amber Alert Wednesday morning after a 5-year-old boy from The Dalles was found safe, and the suspect in his abduction was taken into custody, police said.

The child was reportedly taken from his home just before 6 a.m. Wednesday by 36-year-old Brian Lester Depriest of The Dalles, according to The Dalles Police Capt. Ed Goodman.

Depriest entered the home and attacked the boy's mother and father with a hammer before kidnapping the boy and leaving the scene in a stolen car, Goodman said.

The assault victims were taken by ambulance to Mid-Columbia Medical Center. Their injuries were serious, but not considered life-threatening.

Depriest and the child were found at around 9 a.m. in Dufur, Oregon, which is just south of The Dalles on Hwy 197, according to the Wasco County Sheriff's Office.

The suspect is a former boyfriend of the boy's mother, and a restraining order was in effect against him.

Neighbor Miranda Henricksen told KGW the boy's mom had told her that she had problems in the past with Depriest stalking her.

"That's my son's best friend and it freaks me out because I have a four-year-old. I think that's really horrible," Henricksen said.
