Portland -- Commuters on the I-5 bridge may see or hear something a little different over the next few months because of a project to scare off birds.

Transportation crews set up orchard cannons to get starlings off the lift spans. They assured that the cannons are not lethal weapons.

The starlings often roost on the lift spans, leaving behind unsafe and unhealthy droppings.

The annual project will continue through March.
