SUBLIMITY, Ore. – School officials were on alert after reports that a child predator tried to coerce several children into his car Thursday morning, deputies said.

Officials from Sublimity Elementary School told deputies that around 11:45 a.m., a man driving a 1990s dark green Toyota Camry (similar to picture) approached several kids who were playing in the school’s fenced yard behind the school, said Don Thomson with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office.

The man stayed in his car and did not come onto the school grounds or directly approach the children. Instead, he held a soccer ball outside of his car window and asked if it belonged to them, Thomson said.

As the kids tried to walk away, the man backed his car along the road and continued to encourage them to come to his car, Thomson said.

A teaching assistant watching over the yard spotted the man and walked toward the car. The man then quickly sped off westbound on Starr Road.

The man was described wearing a dark baseball hat with salt and pepper colored hair. He had a dark beard and was wearing glasses.

Principal Missy Riesterer notified the parents of all the children involved, and the school is increasing security.

Anyone with information was asked to call Deputy Chris Bangs at 503-932-3244.
