SALEM -- Salem was ranked number 14 and Eugene 7th in a list of the 15 gayest cities in the United States compiled by The Advocate.

Tacoma, Wash., was ranked number one. Salt Lake City was number six, Seattle five and Spokane number three. A population of 150,000 was required to be considered.

Portland did not make the list, including an Honorable Mention category of 10 additional cities.

The magazine targeting lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender readers said many would be surprised by the places chosen, and wrote that "being a great LGBT city doesn’t just mean having a raucous nightlife, so if you expected to see Hell’s Kitchen or the Castro, you’re reading the wrong list."

The magazine used a point system that included marriage equity, elected officials, transgender protections and whether cities had a gay rugby team or if pop group Scissor Sisters had come to town.

"We live in little burgs and big cities and tons of places in between," the magazine wrote, "so we’re looking at the in-between."

Salem made the list for its "ton of LGBT-welcoming churches" and a strong support network through SalemPride.com.

Eugene was singled out for being "tops when it comes to counterculture, eco-consciousness, and outdoors enthusiasm." The University of Oregon ranked high on the magazine's recommended schools for LGBT students.
