SPRINGFIELD, Ore. (AP) — Springfield, Ore., police Officer Michael Massey responded to Island Park after learning that two cats had been placed in a trash bag and thrown into the Willamette River.

The Register-Guard reports (http://is.gd/kbcbDo ) that the officer saw the cats last Friday night, howling from a tree branch near the river's edge.

Massey wasn't equipped to rescue them so he called police narcotics Detective Keith Seanor, an occasional fishing partner who was home watching TV.

Seanor jumped into his hip wading boots, headed to the river and rescued the two cats.

Police on Monday arrested a 62-year-old Springfield woman, booking her into the Lane County Jail for investigation of attempted first-degree aggravated animal abuse.

The cats were checked by a veterinarian. Police say they'll likely be looking for homes for them.
