PORTLAND -- After big box stores dominated black Friday, the little and local shops celebrated Small Business Saturday.
It’s called Little Boxes PDX, and there’s a guide highlighting hundreds of mom and pop shops, encouraging you to shop local.
The idea behind 'Little Boxes' is to encourage more foot traffic at locally owned stores around the Portland area.
On North Mississippi Avenue, shops like Zahara Boutique are having huge sales to encourage customers to keep their dollars in the community. Shannon Warner said she avoided the shopping rush and big box stores on black Friday.
This is her second year supporting small businesses.
“The thing that’s great about Portland is the little shops, that’s important to us so we like to support them and find something a little different, a little bit unique and stand out that way,” Warner said.
The little boxes event has over 160 local businesses listed in the shopping guide this year.
It’s also getting more notice with social media web sites like Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
