GOVERNMENT CAMP - Fresh snow, along with the latest storms led to Thanksgiving opening for two of the Mount Hood ski resorts.
Mount Hood Meadows announced Wednesday that the 2012-2013 season was kicking off on Thursday. Spokesman Dave Tragethon said four lifts would be operating from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
"Lifts scheduled include the Mt. Hood Express high speed quad, Daisy, Easy Rider and the Buttercup beginner chair," Tragethon said. "The 'Fun Zone' serviced by Mt. Hood’s only enclosed conveyor – the Ballroom Carpet – will also operate."
Timberline opened three of its lower trails on November 20th and announced Thursday that "Stormin' Norman" would also be opened for the first time this season.
SkiBowl has not yet announced when it will open.
The sudden snow dump over the last five days has left the mountain passes covered in snow, so drivers were warned to use caution and be prepared for winter driving conditions.
In Central Oregon, Mt. Bachelor announced after a 2-foot snowfall in 3 days that it would open for the season starting Thanksgiving Day, starting with three lifts open.
The ski resorts on Mount Hood have managed to get enough snow to open before Thanksgiving every year since 2008, when Timberline did not open until December 20. But it turned out to be a good year for skiers and snowboarders after the slow start.
By Thanksgiving last year, Mt. Hood Meadows had a 37-inch base and Timberline had a 54-inch base.
