SALEM -- Governor John Kitzhaber has ordered flags at public institutions to be flown at half-staff Monday in honor of Army Capt. James Nehl.
The 37-year-old Nehl died last week while conducting combat operations in southeastern Afghanistan. He was from Gardiner in Douglas County and had been based at Fort Riley, Kan.
Kitzhaber said in a statement that Nehl's commitment to his nation is inspiring, yet his death is a tragic loss and a reminder of the burden our military and their families continue to bear.
