PORTLAND - Oregon Governor John Kitzhaber told the class of 2025 at Metzger Elementary School Wednesday that the goal for them is a 100-percent high school completion rate.
Kitzhaber spent some time with a few students, parents and staff in the library for the first day of school. He then made an appearance at a school assembly where he got to meet dozens of students and hear the school song.
The governor is working to put together a coalition to find better and more stable ways to fund education.
A 2011 report showed the state graduation rate at 66 percent.
He also expects schools will start to see some changes quickly, like renewing a focus on literacy in elementary schools and science, technology and math in middle and high schools.
