PORTLAND -- A 21-year-old runner was hospitalized after a large tree branch fell on her and pinned her to the ground while she was running on a track in SW Portland.
Melany Crocker runs for the Linfield College track team. She was running at Duniway Track on SW Barbur Blvd. Wednesday night when it happened.
Her coach told KGW that Crocker was doing all right Thursday morning, but she was still in the hospital.
Witnesses heard a crackling sound and watched a huge part of the tree come crashing down.
“It just came down, just spontaneous,” said witness Tirorcho Unaune. “There wasn’t any wind or anything.”
The tree, a large Sweet Gum, hit a few other people, but they weren't seriously hurt.
“We wish for a full and complete recovery of the injured woman,” said Mike Abbaté, Portland Parks & Recreation Director.
The fallen section of the tree was removed Wednesday and a Portland Parks and Recreation representative said the rest of the tree would be removed Thursday.
PP&R officials asked the public to report any tree hazards they see, including downed or hanging limbs or trees, to the PP&R Urban Forestry office at 503-823-4489.
