PORTLAND – After a few morning showers Saturday, the sunshine will arrive from the south across the Portland metro area.

There is still a chance of thunderstorms near the Cascades that will continue through mid-Saturday evening.

Numerous lightning strikes happened Saturday over the Pacific, the Coast Range and the Cascades. Sunday will have a solid cloud cover with possible drizzle spots but will most likely burn off by mid afternoon.

Friday's high hit 98, with the weekend highs in the 80s.

A fire weather watch was issued for the Portland area, effective from Wednesday morning through Friday evening. The National Weather Service also announced an excessive heat warning would be in effect from 1 p.m. until 9 p.m. Thursday.

NWS warns that people should watch for signs of heat exhaustion or heat stroke and they should wear life jackets if they plan to cool off in area waterways.

Portland last set a heat record when the temperature hit 102 degrees on August 4.
