THE DALLES, Ore. (AP) -- Searchers Monday found a 19-year-old Eugene man who was swept downstream by the current while swimming in the Columbia River near The Dalles.
Friends told the Wasco County sheriff's office that James Hawkins swam to a small island near the base of the Highway 197 Dalles Bridge and was trying to swim back Sunday afternoon when the current overpowered him.
His body was found near the bridge around 10 a.m.
