CORVALLIS, Ore. – The mother of a 16-year-old driver died Wednesday, after the teen apparently fell asleep and crashed head-on with another car on Highway 20.

Katherine Wells, of Monmouth, died at the scene. The teen and two people in the other car were taken to a hospital in Corvallis.

The Benton County Sheriff's office said the driver awoke to find himself in the wrong lane and was trying to steer back into his lane when he collided with the oncoming car as it swerved to avoid him.

Deputies did not think drugs or alcohol were factors in the crash. Any witnesses to the crash were asked to call the sheriff's office at 541-766-6858.
