PORTLAND -- Two women were hit by a car as they tried to walk across a crosswalk in Southeast Portland Sunday night, and one of them died of her injuries.

The accident happened around 7:30 p.m. at the corner of SE 80th and Foster. Police said the crosswalk was clearly marked but the driver did not see the pedestrians in the dark.

The women were thrown onto the car’s windshield when they were struck. Police said 23-year-old Lindsay Leonard was killed in the crash and 29-year-old Jessica Finlay was rushed to the hospital in critical condition.

People who live nearby said the intersection is poorly lit and it’s always been a dangerous place to cross the street at night.

“Hopefully this will be a wake-up call for the city to do something more about lighting and control in this intersection,” said Sean Burr, who lives nearby. “This is the third time in five years that something has happened here.”

Police said the driver was cooperating with investigators.

Leonard and Finlay are both from Southeast Portland and investigators said they were coming from the Fred Meyer parking lot when they were struck in the crosswalk.

Finlay remains in critical condition at Oregon Health and Science University.
