PORTLAND – There is still a week to go before the official start of spring, but Wednesday was the warmest day of the year so far in the Portland Metro area.

“Many parts of western Oregon, including Portland, are enjoying the warmest day of the year so far,” added KGW Meteorologist Matt Zaffino. “Our sky will remain mostly cloudy overnight and on Thursday, but highs again should top out around 60-degrees.”

Around Portland, many spring flowers have already started popping, from fruit trees blossoming along the sidewalks, to the more exotic, fragrant flowering shrubs at Portland's Lan Su Chinese Garden.

The Portland Nursery was also buzzing with folks buying flowers, including many that were already in early bloom.

The sights, smells and mild temperatures were too much to resist for Lauren Tyers and her daughter.

“Oh, it feels so good! We had to get out in it. It feels so good, I can tell the temperatures are finally warming up,” said Tyers.

So why does the sun make many people actually feel more perky and positive?

Experts explained that sunshine – particularly morning sunlight – can help reset everyone’s body clock. They said it’s especially important this week, due to Daylight Saving Time.

“You don't have to exercise. You can throw your robe on and floss your teeth [outside], but do it right as you wake up in the morning,” said OHSU psychiatrist Dr. Alfred Lewy. “It seems like it's been a long winter and there is a very definite lift of your spirits and a very definite enthusiasm.”

Lewy added that even just 15-minutes of morning sun will do the trick.
