FORT HOOD, Texas -- A Portland native stationed at Fort Hood is expected to survive after being shot in Thursday's rampage on the Texas Army post.

U.S. Army Reserve Dorothy "Dorrie" Carskadon was critically injured after being shot twice in the hip, according to her brother Trey Carskadon.

"At four o'clock this morning, we received a phone call that my sister was one of the victims."

The Lasalle High School graduate underwent surgery and is expected to make a full recovery, according to her brother. The decorated veteran from Desert Storm recently re-enlisted in the Army Reserves.

According to her brother, Carskadon is a social worker who specializes in treating post traumatic stress disorder and anger management.

"She doesn't do this for any advancement or awards or money. She does it because of her sense of public duty and her sense of service."

Several soldiers from Oregon and Southwest Washington are stationed at Fort Hood. Greg Dixon was outside working on his friend's jeep when he heard gunshots.

"Pretty crazy what happened, can't believe this happened right, right around the corner from me," said the 20-year old. He immediately called his mother in Portland.

"I could hear the gunshots through the phone," said Lisa Dixon. She was relieved to hear her son was okay. “Just sheer terror goes through your mind, because you are not there. You can’t do anything.”
