SCOTTS MILLS, Ore -- Authorities called off the ground search for missing Utah woman Susan Cox Powell early Thursday morning.
Police on Tuesday and Wednesday searched a rural property near Salem, Ore. for the body of the missing mother, who disappeared from her home in Utah in December of 2009.
Chuck Cox, Powell's father, said Wednesday night that two days of searches didn't turn up any sign of his daughter. The property east of Salem, Ore., was in a remote area but had ties to the Powell family, Cox said.
Investigators used five teams to search the property, said Cox. Each used a cadaver dog.
"It was a very promising place to look based on the tip that I got," Cox said.
Cox explained that the tip was about Josh Powell's aunt and uncle, who were renting the property when Susan disappeared in 2009. Josh was Susan's husband.
"That they would be willing to do whatever Steve (Powell, Josh's father) and Josh asked them to do," said Cox. "And it was a concern this was way off the beaten path where people were looking for my daughter."
Susan Powell disappeared from her West Valley City home on December of 2009. Josh Powell, considered a “person of interest” in her disappearance, killed himself and the couple’s two children in an explosion and house fire in Graham, Wash. in February 2012.
Steven Powell is set to be released this month from the Monroe Correctional Complex where he is serving time for taking voyeuristic photographs of two young neighbor girls in various stages of undress.
Cox said nothing was found at the Oregon site, except for some old clothing and possible animal bones.
"They searched the entire area and she just wasn't there," he said. "The dogs didn't find anything."
"I don't think it's going to reveal anything; it may yield some more tips or something but I'm pretty sure she's not out there," he said.
Cox said the family is disappointed.
"The fact that the dogs didn't find here there is depressing and becomes... we're not sure she'll ever be found, but you know you just can't give up because she's your daughter."
