SALEM -- A company in California is sending bogus property tax relief forms to many residents in the state, according to the Oregon Attorney General's office.

The mailing uses official wording like "Regional Processing Center" and “2010 Property Tax Reduction Form” to try and fool homeowners into sending them money .

The mailers also threaten fines if you do not respond.

The California company offers to lower your property taxes while charging a $189 fee. Property tax appeals can be done through county assessors for free.

Anyone who thinks they've been taken should call the Justice Consumer Hotline at 1-877-877-9392 or link to the attorney general's office or to its scam alert web page.
