PORTLAND, Ore. -- A Portland Police officer was shot and one person killed in a confrontation in Northeast Portland Wednesday.

The officer was shot in the leg and taken to Emanuel Legacy Hospital in North Portland and his condition was not life-threatening, Mayor Sam Adams said. One unidentified person was killed in the confrontation that started as a traffic stop near Northeast 6th and Clackamas by Lloyd Center just after 6 p.m.

Several blocks in the area were taped off by investigators.

Bureau spokesperson Mary Wheat called it an "officer-involved" shooting and investigators were on the scene. The officer underwent surgery for a groin injury and was recovering.

KGW Reporter Pat Dooris in Sky 8 a man who appeared to be dead was lying next to an apartment complex and the windows of a nearby car were shot out, describing the evidence of what was a "very violent" scene.

Bystanders reported hearing what they said sounded like a string of fire crackers going off in rapid fire.

Officers with concerned looks gathered at the hospital on a tense day that saw the replacement of their former chief Rosie Sizer, by the mayor's new appointment Mike Reese.

Reese arrived on scene to join detectives.

KGW Reporters Pat Dooris, Mike Benner and Katherine Cook contributed to this report.
