DEPOE BAY -- A man reported missing by a roommate he was flying kites with on a rocky outcropping was pulled from the water and later pronounced dead.

Dennis K. Brockus, 45, of the Depoe Bay area, was flying kites with his roommate about 6 p.m. Thursday near the west end of Vista Street, according to Oregon State Police.

His kite went down on a rocky area and he climbed out to retrieve it. A short time later, the roommate's kite also went down and broke, so he went home to fix it. When he returned, there was no sign of Brockus and the roommate called the Coast Guard.

OSP Sgt. Justin McGladrey said it appears Brockus fell into the ocean while trying to retrieve the kite.

At about 7:50, the Coast Guard spotted Brockus from a helicopter and retrieved him. He was taken to Samaritan North Lincoln Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 9:19.
