PORTLAND – Two soldiers from Joint Base Lewis-McChord are in jail, suspected in the rape of two teenage girls at a Portland hotel.
Portland Police say they learned of the alleged assault early Sunday morning after the girls, ages 15 and 17, showed up at an area hospital. The girls claimed they had been sexually assaulted by numerous men in a hotel room.
JBLM confirmed Wednesday afternoon that the suspects are active duty soldiers.
Spec. Stephen Bardos, 27 and Sgt. Timothy Hartbeck, 22, are being held on rape charges. They were booked into the Multnomah County Jail on $250,00 bail.
Bardos is a member of the 593rd Sustainment Brigade and is a financial management technician. He has been deployed to Afghanistan twice, most recently in 2008. Hartbeck is a Stryker Brigade member and was deployed to Afghanistan July 2009 to 2010.
Lt. Col. Gary Dangerfield said the Army is aware of the investigation and does not know if any other soldiers are involved. He said JBLM will fully cooperate with police.
