Hillsboro police kill man in shootout after wild chase

HILLSBORO -- Police shot and killed a man who fired at least six shots into another car in what police described as a "traffic altercation" in Hillsboro about 1:30 Saturday afternoon.

The man was chased by police into Cornelius and the suspect fired shots at police during the chase. He crashed at 13th and Adair in Cornelius and engaged in a gunfight with police.

The incident began at 10th and Oak in Hillsboro, according to a statement from the Hillsboro police.

A man got out of a car and fired six rounds from a handgun into another vehicle with two men. The passenger was hit by the gunfire. He was taken by Lifeflight helicopter to an area hospital. His condition and identity are unknown.

The suspect fled westbound on Baseline Road, spotted by a Hillsboro officer who started a pursuit. The suspect shot at officers as the chase entered Cornelius.

He crashed at 13th and Adair and continued shooting at police, who returned fire. No officers were hit.
