PORTLAND, Ore. -- A sex offender who disabled a GPS monitoring system has escaped his downtown apartment and investigators were looking for help to find him Tuesday.

Multnomah County deputies said 71-year-old Ronald Eugene Tarwater was on parole for sexually abusing a minor. He has previous convictions for stranger-to-stranger rape.

His last residence was downtown Portland at the Medford Hotel on NW 5th Ave. Tarwater was described as white, with brown hair and blue eyes.

He has a scar on his abdomen, and tattoos of an eagle both on his right forearm and upper left arm.

Anyone with information was asked to call 9-1-1.
