HILLSBORO -- About 100 people were evacuated from homes Friday evening after a car ran off the road, struck a gas valve and ran into a house.

A 15-year-old drove off the road near East Main and South Brookwood Avenue about 6:30 p.m. and into a home on Southeast Chelsea Lane.

The driver, his 22-year-old sister and a baby were able to get out of the car safely, as well as a couple in the home. The venting gas never ignited.

The teen had a learner's permit. He suffered some type of medical problem after the accident and was taken to Tuality Hospital. No one else was hurt.

Police quickly established a safety perimeter and evacuated homes within a two-block area. It took about 90 minutes for Northwest Natural Gas crews to assess the leak, put on protective equipment and shut the gas off.
