Cottage Grove couple accused of abusing 2-year-old girl

COTTAGE GROVE, Ore. -- A Lane County couple face charges after their 2-year-old month daughter was hospitalized.

Cottage Grove police say the couple flagged down officers early Sunday, telling them their daughter was accidentally injured at home.

After interviewing the pair, investigators arrested 21-year-old Michael Orton on a charge of first-degree assault and 21-year-old Antoinette Bernhardt on a charge of first-degree criminal mistreatment.

The extent of the baby's injury has not been released, but Police Chief Mike Grover told The Register-Guard newspaper he did not believe it was life-threatening.
