PORTLAND -- A man and woman were found dead in an apparent murder-suicide Friday evening in Southeast Portland.
Portland police rushed to the site of a reported shooting at an apartment on Southeast 141st Avenue and Southeast Division Street Friday around 5:30 p.m.
Officers believed an injured woman was inside the apartment, and went inside to try and rescue her. But as they began to search the residence more gunshots were heard and they retreated, according to Sgt. Pete Simpson of Portland police.
The Special Emergency Reaction Team and Crisis Negotiation Team responded to assist officers with the situation.
Tear gas and flash bangs were fired into the home and crisis negotiator tried to talk with people inside the apartment with no response, Simpson said.
When officers went inside, they found a man and woman dead in what appeared to be a domestic violence murder-suicide, Simpson said.
No officers fired gunshots during the incident.
Homicide detectives were investigating the deaths. Simpson said there was no risk to the public or additional victims.
Southeast Division Street was closed in both directions from 136th to 145th Avenues. It reopened Friday after 8 p.m.
