PORTLAND -- A century-old statue of Abraham Lincoln at Lincoln High school was beheaded in a senior prank.
On Thursday, the students responsible came forward and admitted the statue was damaged when their prank went wrong.
Principal Peyton Chapman said the head was broken-off overnight Wednesday when a pulley system failed, causing the statue to drop.
Portland police were called thought Chapman said she hopes to handle discipline internally. She told KGW she believes there was no malice involved.
If police choose to pursue the prank gone bad, the result could be a felony arrest.
On Thursday afternoon, students made a make-shift memorial to the statue. At lunch time, students signed a poster and placed flowers and a balloon in the area where the statue once stood.
