PORTLAND -- Prepare to pay a bit extra to visit the Oregon Zoo or Washington Park.
Parking at up to 1,400 parking spots, most of them at the Oregon Zoo, will be subject to hourly meters, possibly by this spring.
The city council voted Wednesday to start the metered parking which will also include parts of Washington Park. Some popular trail heads may be exempt from the meters. Specific details have yet to be worked out.
While Metro runs the Oregon Zoo, the parking lot belongs to the city of Portland. Proceeds from the meters will be used to maintain the park and parking areas.
Neighbors around the zoo and the park complained to the council that the proposal just surfaced in mid-October and they were not given enough time to study the reasoning or impacts of the move.
