PORTLAND -- A Salem husband and wife wanted by federal agents for videotaping sex acts with children have been arrested after surrendering to police.
Michael and Michelle Freeman were expected to make an appearance Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Portland.
An agent interviewed Michael Freeman at the couple's home in Northeast Salem. A criminal complaint filed in court said Freeman agreed to speak with the agent, but said he later would retain an attorney.
Freeman said he learned from a friend that his wife Michelle had been identified as a "Jane Doe" in a photograph that was being circulated by police investigating child pornography.
He was shown a copy of the photograph and identified the woman in the frame as his wife.
Freeman told the agent that "he was in a 'bad place." He admitted taking nude photos and video of children and trading them across the Internet.
Of his wife's involvement, Freeman told the agent "I started it. Somehow she got involved."
Both were booked into the Multnomah County jail and Tuesday and held without bail on a U.S. Marshal's hold.
The criminal complaint concluded that the Freeman could be accused of Sexual Exploitation of a Child (Production of Child Pornography).
Attachments to the complaint outline the manner in which the pornography was distributed over the Internet. An arrest warrant for "Jane Doe" was a part of the court documents in support of the criminal complaint.
