PORTLAND -- The Portland fire marshal issued a total ban on all outdoor burning Thursday, effective until fire danger decreases in the area.
"All outdoor burning. including recreational fires, is prohibited within the city of Portland beginning today, August 16th," said Lt. Michael Silvathe . "This ban is based on weather conditions and community fire safety needs and will remain in effect until weather and fire danger conditions improve.
Silvathe said people who violate the outdoor burning ban could receive citations.
"Cooking outdoors in approved propane or charcoal barbecues is allowed during this total burning ban," he said.
Outdoor firelaces and chiminea-type devices should not be used during the ban.
Portland Fire and Rescue will announce when the ban has been lifted.
