PORTLAND -- A 5-year-old girl crashed into a neighbor’s minivan in Hillsboro Thursday evening, causing a woman to break her pelvis, police said.

The 64-year-old woman fell over next to her Dodge minivan when a 1988 Honda Accord veered across the neighbor’s driveway, crossed a grassy area and struck her van, said Lt. Michael Rouches of the Hillsboro Police Department.

Derrick Hess, 29, of Beaverton was teaching his 5-year-old niece how to start his car in a driveway on Northwest Scott Street. Hess was sitting in the passenger's seat while his niece started the car from the drivers seat, Rouches said.

The girl’s foot slipped off the clutch of the manual transmission car causing her to lose control.

The neighbor was taken in an ambulance to Legacy Emanuel Hospital with a broken pelvis. No one else was injured during the accident, Rouches said.

Police arrested Hess and charged him with a several crimes including child endangerment.
