PORTLAND - A man was killed after being struck while trying to cross I-5 Friday night.

State police say the man, who was identified as 45-year-old Theodore Michael Bennett, was trying to walk across the southbound lanes of the freeway just south of the I-205 Interchange shortly after 10:30 p.m.

Bennett was struck by a vehicle and died at the scene. The accident shut down the freeway for several hours.

Police say some drivers distracted by the accident were also involved in a minor crash in the northbound lanes.

Investigators don't know why Bennett tried to cross the freeway.
