PORTLAND – The City of Portland was reminding citizens Monday that they must pay their Arts Tax by midnight on April 15.

The tax was designed to raise $12 million a year for art and music teachers and art-related groups and projects.

Taxpayers have these options for making their payments:

  • Online through the Portland Bureau  of Revenue website.
  • Over the phone by calling (503) 865-4ART (4278).
  • Through the mail, after completing a form that can be downloaded online or picked up at a local library.
  • Pay in person at 111 SW Columbia Street, Suite 600. (The office will remain open through 7p.m. on April 15.)

Voters in Portland passed the tax with 62 percent of voters giving it the thumbs-up.

Every income-earning adult in the city of Portland is required to pay the arts tax. Those who are under the poverty line must file an exemption form in order to get a break from the payment requirements.

People who earn less than $1,000 a year are also not required to pay the tax.

------------

Editor's note: A previous version of this story included a video with confusing information about an extension for the payment date back in 2013.  The correct deadline for payment in 2014 is April 15 and there will be no extension.
